Two bathrooms merge, with restful amenities added

Chris, Charmaine and their two young daughters live in a charming, suburban home on a lovely, tree-lined street. Not quite so delightful were the house's two identical, back-to-back bathrooms; they were outdated, cramped and awkward.
With Charmaine's birthday on the way, Chris thought it would be nice to rip out the two rooms and make one large bathroom that could be both a restful retreat for his hard-working wife, and a functional space for the whole family.

Gathering inspiration from Charmaine's Chinese background, and Chris' avid interest in Japanese culture, I decided this new room should be a modern, Zen-like oasis -- a deluxe bathroom with an Asian twist that would overlook the family's outdoor garden

I kicked off this project by gutting the two old bathrooms. I knocked down the wall, tore up the floors, ripped out the sinks and cabinets and, when finished, started from scratch. The new floor plan included three distinct sections that would blend seamlessly together: a private shower and toilet area, a modern vanity and storage area and a lavish tub and window area.
The walls were covered in outdated wallpaper, which I replaced with a neutral shade of paint. I then installed 10 feet of windows with integrated louvers along the wall above the tub so Charmaine could get light from outside and feel at one with the great outdoors while in the bath.
The old floors were a tacky, patterned brown vinyl, definitely not very Zen! I used natural materials -- a combination of natural green slate and river stone -- to cover the floors and walk-in glass shower area. For the counters, I chose complementary solid, stone-colored surfaces.
On a portion of the ceiling, I installed a beautiful bamboo flooring material, which will not only function well in this high-humidity area but also create a warm and intimate treehouse-like feeling.
The lighting in the room was out of date and out of style. I upgraded the lights with two contemporary sconces in the mirror over the vanity, a waterproof light in the walk-in shower, recessed lights in the overhead bamboo canopy and, finally, four accent lights in the tub skirt to highlight the new flooring.
Next, I got to work on new cabinets and two separate, sleek wooden vanities: one "girls-only" makeup zone (after all, there will be three women sharing this space), and one with open and closed storage, and two floating hand-crafted basins. I even installed two matching footstools to give the two little girls a boost until they can reach the sinks on their own.
Then came the room's focal point: a new, decadent spa tub that boasts air and water massage, an overhead water-jet and exquisite plumbing fixtures. The tub also features built-in lighting, or "chromatheraphy," or the use of light to achieve well-being. All of the tub's features can be accessed by a floating remote control (we had to give Chris something to call his own).
The last touches on this room involved accents and fabrics from Asian-inspired hand towels to serene statues, as well as his-and-hers cotton seersucker kimonos.
The family's two bathrooms had finally come together and become one. Using contemporary finishes and fixtures, streamlined vanities and countertops and a luxury tub to die for, I created a stress-relieving oasis that incorporates modern practicality and a Far East- inspired ambiance. How feng shui. How divine!

Get Your House Ready For Quick Sale

Get Your House Ready
For Quick Sale

          If you’re planning to
sell your house this spring, you’re going to have a lot of competition for
potential buyers. According to the National Association of Realtors, more homes
are listed and sold between February and June than any other time of the year;
and 2005 will be the second best year on record for home sales. An estimated
6.54 million existing homes will be sold this year. With so much competition,
what can you do to make someone want to buy your house instead of the one down
the street? “It’s simple really,” says Jerry Ritten, a real estate agent with
Counselor Realty in Minneapolis, Minn. “Make sure it’s clean. When I bring
prospective buyers into a clean home, it’s easy for them to envision themselves
living there. If the house is dirty, the first thing they think about is how
much work would be involved in bringing it up to their standards.”

Tips from Professional Agent:  Change your
bathroom sink,
bathroom faucet,
kitchen sink,
kitchen
faucet
,
lightning,
and deep cleaning.

           Ritten says one of
the biggest mistakes home sellers make is failing to keep their property in
“showing” condition. “When they get a call from their agent, sellers often think
they can just make the beds, clear the counters in the kitchen and bath, vacuum
a little and clean the windows, but a serious buyer is going to do more than
just walk through the home,” he says. “They’ll want to closely examine all the
appliances to make sure they are clean and in working order; to open the closet
doors to see how spacious they are; and to look inside the kitchen cabinets to
see how deep they are. If they are confronted by dirt and grime everywhere they
look, potential buyers often leave without giving the property a second
thought.”

Rather than risk a potential sale, these days many people are hiring
professional cleaning services to get their homes in tip-top shape before they
even hit the market. “People who clean for a living definitely have the edge
when it comes to making a property shine,” says Howard Purdy, vice president of
operations for Maid Brigade, a housecleaning service with more than 365
locations in the United States, Canada and Ireland. He says the company’s “Deep
Clean” service is extremely popular this time of year.

“When we send a team into a
home to do a Deep Clean, they start out with the basics. They vacuum with
commercial grade vacuums that pull the air and dust through HEPA filters. They
also sweep, scrub the floors and toilets, and do things most people don’t have
the time or inclination to do themselves. They will clean and dust the insides
of the kitchen and bathroom cabinets; scrub the oven and refrigerator shelves;
clean the drip pans under the refrigerator; wipe the dust off the ceiling fans,
furniture and television sets; whatever the seller wants and needs to get their
home in top showing condition,” says Purdy.

             Once
the Deep Clean is done, Purdy says it’s a good idea to bring the team back
either weekly or bi-weekly -- for as long as the house is on the market -- to
keep things clean. “Home owners don’t need to go out and buy supplies,” says
Purdy. “Our teams bring everything they need with them, and they’re licensed,
bonded and insured which gives people piece of mind.”

             In
addition to making sure the home is clean, other ways to improve its “show
ability” include putting new paint on the walls, having the carpet cleaned, and
redoing the landscaping. “I also urge my clients to do all they can to get rid
of clutter,” says Ritten. “Instead of filling the drawers with junk mail and
stuffing things into closets, I urge them to pack up things they don’t need
right away and either move them into the garage, give them away, or throw them
away. Houses that are neat and orderly show better and sell faster than those
that are cluttered and messy.”

Rare Erma Bombeck Columns Released for Viewing; Teen-ager Already Possessed Trademark Wit

glass sink :: glass sinks :: faucets :: bathroom sink ::To celebrate what would have been Erma Bombeck's 78th birthday (Feb. 21), the University of Dayton has added 15 rare Erma Bombeck columns to the Erma Bombeck Online Museum. These columns were discovered in issues of the Arkay News, published between August 1946 and November 1947. Because Erma was only 19 when she wrote them, few people have ever seen these columns, which provide a glimpse into just how great a writer Erma was at an early age.
DAYTON, OH () February 8, 2005 -- Long before Erma Bombeck waxed eloquent about the perils of raising children and training husbands, she wrote tongue-in-cheek columns about taking the bus to work, filling in for the boss while he’s on vacation and experiencing problems with escalators. In 1946, at 19, Erma Fiste took a part-time clerical job in the personnel office of Rike’s department store in Dayton, Ohio. One of her tasks was writing for the Arkay News, the store’s monthly employee magazine, in which Erma illuminated "the human side of just everyday humdrums that make you laugh at yourself in spite of any old situation.” Fifteen of her columns from the Arkay News are now part of the Erma Bombeck Online Museum (
www.ErmaMuseum.org)."Each year on Erma's birthday we add items to the Erma Bombeck Online Museum," said Tim Bete, humor columnist (www.TimBete.com) and museum curator. "It's our way of honoring Erma and giving her millions of fans something to help remember her.”Erma Bombeck would have celebrated her 78th birthday on Feb. 21, but the gift of her humor lives on because of the online museum created by the University of Dayton with the Bombeck family. Bombeck graduated from UD in 1949. Her syndicated column was carried by 700 newspapers prior to her death of kidney disease in 1996.“Erma’s writing was as crisp and funny at age 19 as when her career took off 20 years later,” Bete said. “Even when she was young, she had the ability to see the hilarious in everyday events.”In one Arkay News column, Erma described the many benefits of working at Rike’s Department Store: "...Rike's hospital would give me my Carter's Little Liver Pill free of charge if I needed it -- I could consume 2,624 calories for only 26 cents in the store cafeteria, and if I adhered to my criminal tendencies, I could even clip recipes from the magazines in the ladies' lounge."In another column, about her experience as a sales clerk, Erma wrote, "I wasn't behind the counter five minutes when I spotted a prospective customer headed toward the door. Using the old running tackle that brought victory to Notre Dame in 1935 I apprehended him. ‘I don't believe you've seen our notions counter,’ I said jumping up and down on his chest."All 15 columns, which were originally published between August 1946 and November 1947, can be read in their entirety in the online museum. Original copies of the magazines are located in the Rike's Historical Collection in the Special Collections and Archives at Wright State University. The Erma Bombeck online museum was launched in February 2002. The museum includes audio and video clips of Erma's family and friends, such as Phil Donahue, Bil Keane, Mike Peters and Liz Carpenter. The museum also contains rare photos, complete episodes of the "Maggie" sitcom Erma wrote and executive produced, and video clips of Erma on Good Morning America. More than 100,000 people visit the online museum each year.Erma Bombeck credited the University of Dayton with preparing her for life and work, for making her believe she could write. The University of Dayton holds the Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop (www.HumorWriters.org) every other year to teach and encourage humor and human interest writers. The University is also assisting in the development of a 30-minute public television documentary about Erma’s life. The program will be distributed nationally late in 2005."Erma's impact and legacy is as strong as ever," Bete said. "And the new additions to the online museum make it an even better place to take a break, remember Erma and laugh.”Visit the Erma Bombeck Online Museum at: www.ErmaMuseum.org.glass sink :: glass sinks :: faucets :: bathroom sink ::
